I know it's late, but I'm hitting the wall in a
BIG way tonight.
I have a sermon due on Malachi (my choice of pericope) the day after research paper #2 is due, and the day before my outline for research paper #3 is due... so I thought I would just knock it out and get it done.
Ha.
Ha.
Ha.
This sermon is just not writing itself in the stilted
style of academia that the prof wants...
I don't have any pictures, images,
or even "heart words"
to get me started...
I've prayed.
Left it and come back to it.
Read it aloud in a couple of versions.
Even tried an impromptu singing of it...
(yeah, THAT was pretty... the cat left the room...)
This paper is very blank...
VERY blank.

I'm done whining. I think "bed" is the best prescription for this.
Maybe I'll get an idea... in my dreams...

Sweet dreams my friend. I sure hope the sermon comes to you soon.
If it's not too late try some sermon sites and see what others may say about that text. At the very least see if any of the sites have illustrations connected to that pericope.
Try: sermons that work. esermons.com. homiletics. and any other site you know of.
When I get stuck I read what other people say about the text. Sometimes that triggers a thought, a connection, an image, a metaphor...that then takes me to what I need to write.
Plus it is usually easier to write a sermon for a congregation of people who one knows and cares about....not just as an academic exercise....
Hope all goes well!!
I am cooking something on shutting the doors - unworthy sacrifices... we'll see if that is what God wants.
The problem is, I have ideas that would "preach" but not "paper" (if you KWIM)...
But I am persevering...
THANKS for the prayers and encouragement... It's due next week (when everything else is due.)

what are you singing if the paper is blank? singing Malachi itself? Speaking of singing, I have a new "mic check" song for you: "Proper Cup of Coffee" by Trout Fishing in America. It's on their live kid's album. The lyrics show up in a web search, but I didn't check further to see if an mp3 is available anywhere.
(Or you could sing the 18 wheeler song off the same album - but Proper Cup of Coffee is much more Gilbert & Sullivanesque.)
I hope the door opened and you have finished this assignment by now!
Yup I was singing the text itself... trust me it was not purty.
No, it's not done yet...
Still struggling with the outline because I can't get it to gel...

Hallelu!
God is gracious...
Finished the draft and put it to one side.
Paper #2 is underway.
Outline for #3 - eh - I'll BS something because I don't write that way. I synthesize and revise out the wazoo as I go. Outlines Shmoutlines! I haven't had to turn in one of those since high school!!!
sigh...
